In the vast, crowded wilderness of the internet, creators who have built an following can (naturally!) Be nervous about straying from the type of content that attracted those viewers. But over the past year 2HYPE member Jiedel has proven that not only can it change its content niche and keep its audience, but it can change and grow it.

The 25-year-old Los Angeles-based YouTuber has been making videos since 2014. Him and his brother Jesser and the rest of the sports / game collective 2HYPE – got their start as a video game-focused creator whose downloads revolved around gameplay in titles like NBA 2K and Madden. This niche formed the bulk of his chain until 2019, when he embarked on the customization of sneakers. And then, in 2020, it changed again.

Over the past year, Jiedel has focused on a combination of culinary content and challenge. It has been tested popular TIC Tac recipes, tried the best pizza LA has to offer, ran 2HYPE quizzes, caught Gordon ramsaymasterclass, blasted your way through a trampoline basketball tournament, and more. It uploads at least once a week, moving from topic to topic with every video posted.

This change of topic is exactly the sort of thing creators can be wary of, but for Jiedel the mix paid off, pushing his channel past a million subscribers.

Check out our conversation with him below.

Tubefilter: Welcome back! It’s been a year since we introduced 2HYPE reaching one million subscribers. What has happened since? Catch up with us!

Jiedel: With the pandemic keeping us all indoors for over a calendar year, not a ton has changed for me personally. But on the channel side, I definitely focused more on food, cooking, and self-help videos through my masterclass series.

Tubefilter: How does it feel to reach the million subscribers? What do you have to say to your fans?

Jiedel: It’s a very cool feeling and I would like to thank everyone who helped me achieve this goal. Having said that, that’s just a number, and I feel like the same guy I was at 900,000, 800,000, etc.

Tubefilter: For those who don’t know you, tell us a bit about yourself! Where do you come from? What were you doing before YouTube?

Jiedel: Before YouTube, I was a journalism student at Rutgers University. I was an intern for the NFL the summer before graduation, working on their YouTube channels, so becoming a full-time YouTuber was what I was preparing for, in a way.

Tubefilter: When and why did you start a YouTube channel? Did you get started knowing what content niche you wanted to focus on, or did you discover your area along the way?

Jiedel: When I started with YouTube, I was doing NBA 2K MyTEAM videos, I was inspired by my brother Jesser and KSI with their respective series. Even though the videos were love comments, I always liked the story arcs that formed over the episodes.

I knew I wanted to make game videos (at first), but I wasn’t always sure what to do. I loved doing reconstructions on Madden and NBA 2K, but I didn’t know people would be interested in watching this until years after doing YT. I also want to thank Jon Graham, who was called Digitalph33r, for being a gigantic inspiration for me wanting to make YouTube videos. His Halo the videos are what ultimately made me fall in love with the platform.

I also note that I change zones every year, I have never done the same thing on a constant basis. In 2017, it was NBA 2K My TEAM, 2019 NBA rebuilds, 2020 sneaker customization, 2021 cooking and matching challenges.

Tubefilter: Is YouTube Your Full Time Job? How often do you film (both for yourself and for 2HYPE)? What does the average day look like for you?

Jiedel: YouTube has been my full-time job since February 2017. We film for 2HYPE on average once a week, and for my personal channel on average two to three times a week. I also film from time to time for 100 Thieves.

I film a lot, but I would say when I was on the come-up and I was younger I definitely did more, in the sense that I now have a great team to help me film. and to ride that I didn’t have before. I have also aged in my five or so years, so other responsibilities in life can eat into my time.

Tubefilter: What’s your favorite part of creating content on YouTube?

Jiedel: Spending time with my brother and the other guys at 2HYPE. I would say guys are all my best friends and a lot of the content creators I know are some of the nicest, most genuine people I’ve ever met.

Tubefilter: Have you expanded your content and personal brand outside of YouTube? Have you launched a merch, a related business, a presence on another social platform…? Do you want?

Jiedel: Kris, Jesse and I started TruCreator, a company that makes sports cards from content creators. People really liked the two products we’ve released so far, and we’ve got even more on the horizon for that.

As for other platforms, I’m happy to exist as a YouTuber, and if other things come up, they come.

Tubefilter: What’s next for you? Future-oriented projects?

Jiedel: I don’t know what I’m filming tomorrow, let alone 2022 and beyond, so we’ll see.
